Field Trips

Post-Symposium Field Trips Field

Trip 1:

Remote Sensing of Southeast O'ahu

Date:  Wednesday, November 12, 2003
Time: 1:00 pm to 6:30 p.m.
Limit: 24
Cost: $30.00

Introduction to the different satellite and aircraft remote sensing data sets collected over SE O'ahu, and how they may be used to help mitigate against natural disasters. This field trip will take you to several places of geological and/or remote sensing interest around the SE part of the island, and will review data from Landsat, Ikonos, SPOT, MODIS, TOPSAR and weather satellites.
Depart Hotel at 1:00 pm Return to Hotel at 6:30 p.m.

Trip 2:

Remote Sensing of Coral Reefs in Hawai'i

Date: Wednesday, November 12, 2003
Time: 1:00 pm to 6:30 p.m.
Limit: 24
Cost: $30.00

This trip will visit the coral reefs in Kaneohe Bay on Oahu's windward coast. Examples of the hyper spectral remote sensing data that are being used to study the reef will be used in this tour, along with a diversity of other satellite and aircraft data sets for the Bay. While not a requirement, this field trip is a good complement to Workshop 4 on Saturday November 8th when the remote sensing of the reef will be discussed.
Depart Hotel at 1:00 pm Return to Hotel at 6:30 p.m.

Trip 3:  Field Trip closed.

Kilauea Summit and Upper East Rift Zone

Date: Saturday, November 15, 2003
Time: 5:30 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.
Limit: 25
Cost: $250.00
Location: Big Island of Hawai'i
Note: Lunch included. Please indicate if you are vegetarian.

Visit USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Observe Kilauea Caldera and Halemaumau, home of Pele. Visit lava flows as young as 1982 - possibly much younger. See 10-ton blocks that were hurled from Halemaumau in 1924. Learn how the national park deals with volcanic crises. Tour Chain of Craters, cross gaping ground cracks, and get great coastal views from the top of the Hilina fault system. Visit the site of 600-m lava fountains in 1959. Walk through a 550-year-old lava tube before returning to Hilo.

NOTE: The summit of Kilauea is at 1,200 m elevation. It can be cool or warm (15-22º C), wet or dry, calm or blustery, sunny or cloudy - all in the same day. Please bring sunscreen, a hat that doesn't blow away, a windbreaker, and appropriate footwear like light boots or solid sneakers. Air quality can be poor owing to volcanic gas. The trip will try to avoid seriously obnoxious conditions, but those with asthma should be careful.
Depart Hotel at 5:30 a.m. Return to Hotel at 9:45 p.m.

Trip 4:  Field Trip closed.

Remote Sensing of Active Volcanism - Big Island of Hawai'i*

Date: Saturday, November 15, 2003
Time: 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Limit: 24
Cost: $225.00

Visit the summit caldera of Kilauea Volcano, some flows along the east Rift Zone, and try to see active lava flows at the coast. If you sign up for this trip, you must wear boots or other sturdy closed-toed shoes, bring a hat, gloves, wear long pants (adds protection in case you fall), sun screen of SPF 15 or higher, bring rain gear, and if you wish, a camera and binoculars. Note: Falling on lava is like falling on broken glass. The slightest fall can cause deep cuts.
Depart Hotel at 5:30 a.m. Return to Hotel at 8:00 p.m.

Trip 5:

Pacific Disaster Center, Maui High Performance Computing Center and Haleakala*

Date: Saturday, November 15, 2003
Time: 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Limit: 10
Cost: $350.00

Location: Island of Maui Visit the Pacific Disaster Center and the Maui High Performance Center at Maui's High Technology Park for an overview of advanced spatial data processing and analysis activities, based on case history studies recently completed or underway, applied to natural and human induced disasters. During the morning, take a scenic tour to Haleakala. Note: The top of Haleakala is quite cold. Please dress for 45°F with strong winds. Bring snacks and water.
Depart Hotel at 5:00 a.m. Return to Hotel at 8:30 p.m.

*Deadline to register for field trips to the Big Island and Maui, Field
