Workshops

Pre-Symposium Workshops

Workshop 1:

Satellite Remote Sensing of Natural Hazards of Hawai'i

Date:   Saturday, November 8, 2003
Time:  9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Limit:  15 (computer workstation set-up)
Cost:   $30.00
Venue:  Geology Department Computer Room, University of Hawai'i at Manoa

Introduction to the analysis of real-time data sets for Hawai'i and the SW Pacific through a computer based tutorial, and the use of Landsat and EOS data in the monitoring of transient events such as volcanic eruptions and fires.  Introduction to Field Trip 1 on Wednesday, November 12.

Bus departs Hotel at 8:30 a.m. Bus returns to Hotel at 1:30 p.m.

Workshop 2:

Risk and Vulnerability Applications and Networking Workshop

Date:  Saturday, November 8, 2003
Time:  9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Limit:  40 (classroom style)
Cost:   $50.00
Venue:  Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort

Workshop for scientists and decision makers interested in science and technology applications and solutions for natural hazard mitigation.  Workshop will highlight state-of-the-art disaster modeling and visualization, loss estimation, remote sensing, and geographic information analysis tools utilizing web-based information distribution and management tools (including use of Integrated Decision Support System, enhanced website, and online Interactive Natural Hazards and Vulnerabilities Atlas).  Workshop will focus on recent risk assessment and vulnerability case studies for American Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Barbados.

Workshop 3:

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for Earth Science Research and Applications:  Tactical Support for Natural Disasters Detection, Characterization and Response

Date:  Saturday, November 8, 2003
Time:  1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Limit:  50 (theater style)
Cost:   $50.00
Venue:  Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort

The goal of this Workshop will be to establish personal contacts and develop a common understanding in the remote sensing community about the potential usefulness of UAVs.  The workshop is organized as a forum of discussion, sharing ideas and technical experience regarding the use of UAVs as remote sensing platforms.  Interactive presentations include 1) introduction to the latest developments in UAV platform technologies and sensor payloads; 2)  facing the challenges of operating UAVs in National Airspace; 3)  potential applications of UAVs including fire monitoring, disaster relief and homeland security; and 4)  actual applications and demonstrations of UAVS.

Workshop 4:

Remote Sensing of Coral Reefs of Hawai'i

Date:  Saturday, November 8, 2003
Time:  1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Limit:  15 (computer workstation set-up)
Cost:   $30.00
Venue:  Geology Department Computer Room, University of Hawai'i at Manoa

Hawai'i has a large percentage of all of the coral reefs in the United States, and researchers in Hawai'i are some of the leaders in the use of hyper spectral remote sensing for the analysis of reef health and distribution.  This computer-based workshop will introduce some of these data processes techniques.  While not a requirement, this workshop is a good complement to Field Trip 2 on Wednesday, November 12th when the reef in Kaneohe Bay will be visited.

Bus departs Hotel at 1:00 p.m. Bus returns to Hotel at 6:00 p.m.

NOTE:  Workshop 4 is now full as of August 14.  If you would like to be put on the waiting list for this workshop, should spots open up, please register.  This will indicate that you are interested in this activity and your name will be placed on the waiting list.  You will be sent an invoice for this activity if another person cancels their attendance.

Workshop 5:

Web-based Information Centers for Remote Sensing Application Development

Date:  Sunday, November 9, 2003
Time:  1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Limit:  15 (computer workstation set-up)
Cost:   $30.00
Venue:  Geology Department Computer Room, University of Hawai'i at Manoa

This workshop will provide participants with different concepts in setting up web-based, geospatial information centers to provide information that can be readily understood by decision-makers in near real time.  Preparation of the interactive sessions is a joint effort from the Universities of Texas, Arizona, Missouri, Hawai'i, and Towson under the NASA-funded Synergy project.  New approaches for developing fast Internet mapping browsers, as well as techniques for distributing large amounts of remotely-sensed and related geospatial data using Web mapping methods will be discussed.  The full life cycle of developing remote sensing applications from gathering user requirements to product development and distribution via the web will be discussed.  Specifically, the speakers will discuss the full life cycle development in three application areas: Rangeland monitoring, Urban mapping, and mapping of natural resources.  Participants in this workshop will be able to directly interact with specialists in these application areas and network.  The speakers in this workshop are:

Mr. Tim Haithcoat – University of Missouri - Columbia
    Dr. Satya Kalluri - Raytheon
Dr. Stuart Marsh – University of Arizona - Tucson
Dr. Jay Morgan – Towson University
Ms. Dawn Ortiz – University of Texas at Austin

People registering for this workshop are encouraged to visit the following web pages for more information on the applications that will be discussed during the workshop:

NOTE:  Workshop 5 is now full as of August 13.  If you would like to be put on the
waiting list for this workshop, should spots open up, please register.  This will
indicate that you are interested in this activity and your name will be placed on
the waiting list.  You will be sent an invoice for this activity if another person
cancels their attendance.
